Habits are definitely an essential part of our lives. Influencing both our time at home and in the workplace, they help to dictate our actions and natural behaviors. In this article, we’re going to discuss some great habits to help improve your music career.

Time management

Firstly, effective time management is absolutely crucial to maintaining a successful music career. We all have the same amount of time in a day. What matters is that you’re able to optimize your schedule to perform exceptionally well at your tasks for the day. 24 hours. 86,400 seconds. That’s it. What are you doing whilst you’re awake? Evaluate and criticize every single moment that you’re awake.
Many famous entrepreneurs within the entertainment industry focus on scheduling out every single hour of the day. If you’re genuinely serious about your success, you shouldn’t have a problem undergoing this task.

  1. Write a list out of every single activity you need to complete. Include sleeping, meals and work.
  2. Write out every single hour in a day, and what you plan to achieve in that hour.
  3. Stick to the schedule for at least 2 weeks, and you will notice a massive increase in your productivity.

If you struggle to discipline yourself, spending time with successful music producers will certainly help you to achieve your dreams much quicker. Taking time to generate meaningful relationships with people you aspire to be like will be paramount to the achievement of your goals. In order to maximize the amount of productivity within the day, waking up early can be a great start. Many famous entrepreneurs within the music industry do this so that they can focus on their work whilst the world is still sleeping. After all, it’s great not to have any distractions. If you struggle with rising early, simply set your alarm for half an hour earlier than usual. Although it may not initially seem like much, that’s half an hour extra work time.

Planning

The next habit to focus on is undoubtedly the ability to plan your time well. It’s a good idea to set aspirational goals, but it’s totally pointless if you fail to achieve them due to poor planning. You have to ask yourself how you will get from Point A to Point B. For example, it could be that you want to finish a new song this week. Therefore, you could set aside certain hours every day to focus solely on that project. Once you have a good plan, it makes your time management a lot more efficient as you have a good idea of how to achieve a certain goal. In order to improve your planning more, track your progress on a certain task every single day until you achieve it. Do you need to work harder? Is the allocated time slot reasonable for the selected task? Those are all questions that you must ask yourself.

Setting goals

Besides time management and planning, daily goal setting is an essential habit that you should be focusing on when looking to improve your music career. Large names within the industry such as Scooter Braun, DJ Khaled, and Martin Garrix will all have long-term goals of what they wish to achieve in their careers, and also daily goals. This should immediately be centered around your long-term goals for the future. However, each step is incremental to achieving that ambition. For example, if you wish to play at Tomorrowland next year, you could look at establishing relationships with the festival organizers, other DJ’s regularly playing at the event etc. By setting a daily goal, you’re able to move closer towards your long-term ambitions with every passing day.

Persistence

But even if you’re amazing with your time management and general goal setting, it’s unlikely that you’ll get anywhere without being persistent. This doesn’t mean spamming every single person who doesn’t reply to your email. But instead, it focuses around not giving up on your ambitions. Remember the saying that “every no is one step closer to a yes”. It’s great if you plan on taking action and achieving your ambitions – but it’s pointless if you don’t actually follow through, and so you procrastinate. Sticking with the scenario of wanting to play at Tomorrowland, if one person doesn’t like your music, that doesn’t mean that others won’t. At the end of the day, there are over 7 billion people on this planet. So be persistent and focus on your goals if you wish to achieve them.

Finally, never settle or get complacent. This is probably the biggest killer of all goals. Once people start to achieve their dreams, they quickly become complement because they finally have the contacts, the money etc. However, that complacency simply delays the date of achievement for the long-term goals. Tell yourself that nothing is impossible to accomplish – and don’t give up until you meet every single one of your goals.
