Regret is an emotion regularly faced in the music industry by many EDM producers. With a constant pondering of “what if”, a lot of people seem to wish that they carried out different actions when looking back in hindsight. In this article, we’re going to discuss the roots behind regret in the music industry, and what can be done to combat it.

Motivation is undoubtedly the key to success when evaluating the success of somebody in the music industry. For example, DJ Snake faced a lot of adversity growing up in the suburbs of Paris. However, his determination to get out of the situation that he was in and become successful within the music industry is definitely inspiring for a lot of people. After all, if we don’t try to achieve our dreams, we will never know what would have happened. The exact same theory applies to the majority of producers: they want to fulfil their ambitions to get out of adversity. Regret is poison. It’s the one thing that we want to live without. However, there are some people that are unable to overcome regret and thus become stifled by their dreams.

As an example, a producer could release their favourite new track with a record label in the hope that it becomes the “next big thing”. But upon the release of the song, they realize it’s performing poorly, regret releasing it, and believe that the consumer market does not like their music, and therefore give up on their dream of being a producer. Although this example doesn’t apply to everyone, it is certainly an emotional thought to realize how many producers could have been successful if they simply followed their dreams instead of regretting their actions.

Keeping with the scenario of the previous example, imagine if they didn’t give up being a producer, and their next song ended up being a smash hit gaining millions of Spotify streams. Throughout the music industry, we are faced with constant decisions that determine our future. However, you should not be put off from your dream just because “one song didn’t do well” or you thought “people would like it more”. Instead of regretting releasing a failed a song, you could instead use it as an opportunity to evaluate what you are doing well in the industry, and what you need help with. After all, if you’re able to overcome your weaknesses, you’ll be able to go all-in on your strengths.

Fear is another reason why people regret not doing something. Sure, reaching out to your favourite producer might be scary right now. But in 50 years time, will it really seem like such a big deal? Probably not. Instead of feeling scared, there’s a high probability that you’d regret not asking them. After all, you’ll never know what could have been. No matter what, it’s always better to try and fail than to ignore an opportunity and regret it for the rest of your life.

If you see an opportunity, take it. If you want to achieve something, do it. There is nothing worse than living your life filled with regret and seeing your dreams buried in the cemetery. More often than not, you will be surprised at the effect of simply saying yes, and going after your dreams. Regret kills dreams because so many people within the music industry are scared to go after what makes them happy. But as a collective, if we are able to go all-in on our passion, and live a life with no regret, a much higher majority of us would be accomplishing our goals in life. Have no regrets within your career. Have no regrets in life. That’s all you need to be motivated for the upcoming years filled with hard work and success.
